Sweetlings are a male-only breed of dragons released on Valentine's Day 2010. Each scroll was limited to 2 Sweetlings during their release; further Sweetling eggs were automatically abandoned after 15 minutes. Sweetlings, being a holiday breed, are only available around Valentine's Day.
During the original release a glitch during the early hours of the 14th caused eggs to auto-abandon. As an apology the affected scrolls were activated for alts. These users would hatch alternate-colored Sweetlings, with a black and red color scheme and a skull and cross bones. Alt Sweetlings were designed to represent 'Singles Awareness Day,' or 'SAD'.
Unlike other alt dragons that come in regular and alt forms, alt sweetlings are not true alts. All sweetlings are the same form, with the "alt" appearance being purely cosmetic to particular scrolls. All sweetlings automatically change to a scroll's colouration regardless of their lineage or whether they are eggs or hatchlings. Traded sweetlings thus become the colouration of the scroll they arrive on, and may change from alts, become alts, or remain the same depending on their destination. As a result, scrolls may only obtain alts or normal colouration and not both.
During the 2011 and 2012 valentine breeding period, certain Sweetlings bred from other Sweetlings alted. This was a glitch.
When sorted by "Breed" they are listed as "Valentine 2010 dragon" on a users scroll.

"Aww... It's a cute baby dragon. It's very curious and fond of sweets. And look! It's grown feathers! It must be close to maturing."
"Sweetlings are a small, flightless breed of dragon. They are herbivores who favor sweet fruits and honey, and have been known to go to great lengths to obtain their favorite treats. Their long, prehensile tails allow them to grab onto branches and give them superior balance. Sweetlings are expressive dragons and have a large array of calls to communicate with others. They become very vocal during breeding season and sing long, beautiful melodies to attract a mate. Inquisitive in nature, Sweetlings are known to investigate anything that piques their interest, and are quick to flee if the object of their curiosity strikes back."
