Shumoga Dragons were released on August 22, 2021, alongside Pyropellis Wyverns.

Shumoga Dragons occur in two variants, the lighter "pale" variant and a darker "wild" variant. The variant is determined by the means of hatching the Shumoga egg.

Adult[]

Pale[]

Shumoga Dragons are a skittish breed, more likely to spit fire at a threat and take to the air than stand and fight. However, if cornered, they will wield their fiery breath and sharp hind claws in lethal defense. Their claws are also a powerful weapon for hunting—they drop down on their prey from above and disembowel it with a swift slash. Pale Shumoga Dragons are rarely seen in the wild, as their coloring only fades to a soft orange if the hatchling remains in their egg for a long period of time. They tend to be scorned by their dark-winged brethren because they are considered weaker, but they have a much calmer and more friendly temperament. Unlike their wild kin, they do not force eggs to hatch but rather allow their hatchlings to choose when to emerge.

Wild[]

Shumoga Dragons are a skittish breed, more likely to spit fire at a threat and take to the air than stand and fight. However, if cornered, they will wield their fiery breath and sharp hind claws in lethal defense. Their claws are also a powerful weapon for hunting—they drop down on their prey from above and disembowel it with a swift slash. In the wild, females turn their eggs daily in the nest and will crack the shells with a hind claw to encourage hatching once the egg developed enough to survive. Wild Shumoga Dragons always have dark silver scales and black wings due to this forced hatching, and those that survive to adulthood display these colors proudly as a sign of survival of the fittest. However, the stress of hatching early affects their temperament, and adults tend to be nervous, irritable, and quick to take offense.

Variant determination[]

Shumoga Dragons have a pale variant and dark (wild) variant. Eggs that hatch naturally from gaining views will produce the pale variant. The dark variant is produced by forcing an egg to hatch early, either by attempting to kill it or by use of Earthquake.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • All four paws have three toes each, but each hind paw has a large, sharp claw designed for slicing and tearing.
  • Their tail fur is stiff and wiry.
  • They breathe fire in short, hot bursts.
  • Their long neck dictates the need for smaller bites of food so their meal can more easily pass to their stomach. For this reason, Shumoga Dragons tend to nibble at their food rather than tear off large chunks.
  • When a hatchling first begins to develop, it is very dark in color. This coloring is slowly absorbed as the hatchling grows within the shell.
  • In addition to their wings being more colorful, Wild Shumoga also possess elongated secondary feathers, which the dragons use for display. Molted Wild Shumoga feathers in good condition are prized among jewelry makers for their vibrant colors.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Due to forced hatching, Wild Shumoga tend to be more sickly and need plenty of care to survive. Because of this, they remain with their parents for a longer time than Pale Shumoga hatchlings.
  • Young wild Shumoga hatchlings are very nervous and shy, spooking at any potential threat.
  • Hatchlings raised by humans tend to be friendly and curious, though wild Shumoga raised by humans may still remain more irritable.
  • Hatchlings can get quite rough with playing and may accidentally cut one another with their sharp hind claws. For this reason, those raised by humans may have their claws trimmed until they’re old enough to be careful.
  • Practice flights begin when their primary feathers develop, although they are not allowed to take unsupervised flights until nearly full grown.

Adult Behavior

  • Shumoga Dragons form loose-knit communities, with males and single females hunting while mated females care for eggs and hatchlings.
  • Wild Shumoga Dragons will chase pale ones away from their territory. However, there have been instances where communities built predominantly of pale Shumoga have welcomed vagrant wild ones.
  • Status within a community is determined by hunting prowess and fire strength; among wild Shumoga, their colorful plumage may also play a role.
  • Mates are chosen through mutual presentations of roasted meat; both male and female will sample the offering and either accept it by swallowing or spit it out in rejection.
  • Wild Shumoga, although nervous and skittish as young, are irritable and aggressive as adults. They are also rather prideful, and see their survival as a mark of strength.

Habitat

  • Found mainly in savannahs, plains, deserts, and other areas with plenty of flat, open area to allow for easy movement and unimpeded flight.
  • Although widespread, Shumoga Dragons tend to stake out a territory and don’t travel far beyond its borders unless pressed by scarcity of food.

Diet

  • Shumoga Dragons are true carnivores and only consume meat.
  • Shumoga Dragons prefer to roast their meat before eating.
  • They will tear food into small bites for very young hatchlings.

Trivia[]

  • Infinis designed the force-hatched variant mechanic because she likes the Earthquake BSA and challenging mechanics.[1]
