Adult

Sandwaste Dragons are sparsely distributed across very hot, sandy, dry deserts. They grow to large sizes, but very slowly, and they are well adapted to the harshness of the desert, being capable of surviving for long periods with very little water and food. They are constantly on the hunt for prey large enough to sate them, catching it mostly by ambush or, rarely, running it down. However, Sandwaste dragons are opportunistic and will not shun carrion, insects, and even plants when desperate. They are solitary and nomadic and build no lasting bonds with one another, though there is little animosity among Sandwaste dragons when they encounter each other.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

• Sandwastes are large, powerfully built dragons. Their bodies are covered with large scales.
• Females are a pale sandy color while males are a rich brownish-purple. Their manes are short and rough; males’ manes are red, while females’ manes are blue-grey.
• Their horns curve backward and outward. They may give the impression of large ears from certain angles.
• They have heavy jaws with long, sharp teeth.
• Their feet are big and the toes spread out to walk more easily on sand.
• Sandwastes have very short, thin tails with a small tuft of fur at the tip.
• Their wings are large, but they mainly reserve flight until they need to travel long distances.
• All young hatchlings are, like their eggs, a pale sandy color for camouflage. Males begin to darken when their manes start growing in.

Hatchling Behavior

• Hatchlings are active and like to chase their mothers’ tails.
• Sandwaste hatchlings remain immature for a long time, remaining in their mother’s care for many years.
• Orphaned hatchlings under a certain age stand little chance of surviving on their own.
• Hatchlings enjoy trips to oases, because it is these few times when they can meet up with other hatchlings.

Adult Behavior

• Sandwastes make little to no noise. When encountering one another, a brief and respectful nod is usually exchanged before they continue on their ways.
• Mothers caring for young may interact more, such that they can trade information on the nearest oasis or herd movements.
• Sandwastes can hold their own in a fight, but nearby sandwastes may come to the aid of another sandwaste under attack, despite their usual solitude.
• They have no set breeding season; they only mate if males and females encounter one another and are interested.

Habitat

• Sandwastes live only in deserts with large sand dunes.
• They are extremely heat tolerant and can be seen wandering even at midday.
• Sandwastes try to bury their eggs near a landmark such as a boulder, and remain nearby until the eggs hatch.
• Sandwastes are nomadic; they can be found anywhere within the confines of the desert.
• These dragons prefer their space and are spread thinly over the desert. It is rare to encounter more than two when crossing the desert.

Diet

• Sandwastes are mainly carnivorous, preferring to hunt down large ungulates for food.
• They will chase away other animals from their kills if the opportunity presents itself.
• Insects and plants are typically only hunted in desperation, as insects are too small and plants not nutritious enough for an adult sandwaste.
• Hatchlings will readily eat large insects.
• Sandwastes often ambush prey by dropping down on it from above.
• Hatchlings need water and food more often than adults, so mothers caring for young normally stay close to oases.
• Sandwastes can survive on little food and water for long periods of time. As a result, they grow very slowly, and may take more than a decade to finish growing.
