Royal Crimson Dragons were released on April 7, 2013, alongside Sophrosyne Dragons.

Breeding a Royal Crimson Dragon with a Guardian Dragon may produce a Nobleshield Dragon, while breeding it with a Royal Blue Dragon may produce a Royal Eminence Dragon.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

This large egg is a dark crimson color.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It seems rather lazy.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It seems rather lazy.

And look! It’s gotten much larger and grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Royal Crimson Dragons are so named due to their massive size and confident, regal bearing. Most of the time they are laid back, ignoring non-prey creatures smaller than themselves, although they will occasionally take fresh kills from other dragons as a reminder of their place in the social order. Although there are few other dragons large enough to pose a threat to Royal Crimsons, they have little tolerance for potential rivals and will fiercely defend their territory from such intruders.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Eye color can vary from a pale yellow to reddish-orange.
  • Their tails are strong, and the long spikes at the end can prove to be devastating weapons.
  • The scales on their bodies have a slight iridescence to them, and can appear deep red or almost orange depending on the lighting.
  • Their claws are sharp, and partially retractable.
  • Females are both heavier and taller than the males.
  • Adults are capable of flight, but due to their size and solid build cannot sustain it for long distances.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Although it can be difficult to win their affection, hatchlings seem fairly content in “captivity,” so long as they are provided with ample supplies of food.
  • Adults guard their eggs jealously, but show little interest once they have hatched. The timeframe during which they feed their hatchlings regularly is quite short.
  • As they grow older, they become less tolerant of the company of other dragons.
  • Once near maturity, they go through a phase of rough-housing, at which point most smaller breeds begin to avoid them.
  • Captive hatchlings should be encouraged to remain active to avoid health complications due to over-feeding and lack of competition.

Adult Behavior

  • Capable of breathing fire.
  • Smaller dragons that Royal Crimsons don’t perceive as a threat can sometimes get away with a surprising amount of mischief, simply because Crimsons are more inclined to ignore than acknowledge them.
  • Although their fire is primarily used aggressively, it is also used as a source of warmth; gathering large rocks and breathing fire over them until they’re red-hot and will radiate heat for some time.
  • Both males and females frequently employ deep, bellowing roars as a means of staking out territory and warning off potential rivals. The sounds can often be heard from many miles away.
  • During breeding season their usual preference for posturing over battle changes, and males will rarely back down even from obviously larger opponents.
  • They do not have complex mating rituals, but males are cautious to approach females during breeding season, even after proving themselves against other males.
  • Females have been known to kill prospective mates who do not meet with their approval.

Habitat

  • They spend a great deal of time sunbathing on rocky ledges, particularly during the Spring and Fall when the air is cooler.
  • While they don’t hibernate, during the winter they become even less energetic than usual and can often be found wallowing in hot springs or lying near lava flows.
  • Males and females will occasionally tolerate overlapping territories, although once boundaries are established they go out of their way to avoid coming into contact with each other. Individuals of the same sex rarely reach such truces.

Diet

  • They supplement their diets with minerals gained through drinking from hot springs and eating volcanic clay.
  • A large part of their “lazy” nature is due to the amount of nutrition required for a dragon of their size.
  • Some will consume other dragons when other prey is scarce.
  • Smaller prey animals will sometimes take refuge near Royal Crimsons, knowing their predators are more likely to be large enough to make an enticing meal than they are.

Additional information[]

I'm so glad that you guys are liking the adult RC! \o/

HUGE credit goes to Nectaris for making these guys turn out as well as they did. <3 RCs are my concept, and I did the hatchlings and had a more detailed painting/sketch for the adult head... but couldn't get a pose sketch that I liked to work out. Nectaris came through and saved the day with an awesome sketch and line art for the adult. She's got some mad skillz. ;D And then I ended up doing the adult shading. So many thanks and kudos to her!

And yes, the name is what was amusing me earlier. *g* I did not intend to set a pattern of "spriter of Royal dragons." XD these guys were actually finished some time before RBs were released, and I went back and forth on several potential names for them - I'd half forgotten which variation I settled on in the end.
