Official Dragon Descriptions

Egg

This egg radiates an otherworldly chill.

Hatchling

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has four eyes and a habit of popping up unexpectedly.

Mature Hatchling

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has four eyes and a habit of popping up unexpectedly.

And look! It’s started vanishing into mysterious holes in the air!

Adult

Rift Wyrms are dragons adapted to both the frigid depths of the sea and the void that exists in the space between spaces. They have the ability to rip holes in the fabric of space that lead into and out of the void, and can manipulate the size and location of these rifts with additional effort. Their bodies give off an unsettling chill, while their mouths tend to glow from the mana they’ve consumed. Between their appearance and their method of travel, Rift Wyrms have a reputation as eldritch creatures that do not belong in this world. They tend to have a mischievous streak facilitated by their abilities. This ranges by individual from harmless japery to active malevolence, and many people and dragons are wary of them. Despite their reputation as tricksters, these wyrms are curious and may choose to help others on a whim just as often as they decide to harm.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Rift Wyrms are large, proportionately long wyrms, purple on the upper side of their body and yellow on the underside.
  • They have four horns curved towards the front of their face, four eyes, and gills lining the sides of their necks. These gills can close up when the wyrms are out of the water.
  • A Rift Wyrm’s skin is soft, damp, almost velvety, and quite cold to the touch. Despite the soft texture, it’s quite difficult to puncture or tear.
  • The inside of a Rift Wyrm’s mouth is bioluminescent. It is thought that this is to attract prey.
  • Rift Wyrms have very small, sharp teeth angled back into their throat, with a second entire row of teeth inside the first.
  • Their saliva is an anticoagulant, so bites from them heal slowly and tend to bleed profusely.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Newly-hatched Rift Wyrms are quite active and adventurous, but also a bit nervous.
  • As young hatchlings, they lack the rift-creating abilities of the adults, and will instead wedge themselves into tight spaces for safety.
  • Fast learners, very observant and intelligent, and quick to discern who is safe and who is not.
  • Adults do take care of their young to an extent, but beyond basic socialization and protecting them, do little to help a hatchling establish themself.
  • Young Rift Wyrms start to show their species’ characteristic propensity for mischief as soon as they feel secure in their environment.
  • As they near adolescence, they develop the ability to create rifts, and this is when their parents stop protecting them—though Rift Wyrms almost never attack younger members of their species.
  • Rift Wyrms, especially hatchlings, are very chatty when encountered, but it’s difficult to know if they are talking about anything useful or important.

Adult Behavior

  • Rift Wyrms are very odd creatures, and seem quite aware of their unsettling nature.
  • These dragons are known for playing pranks on other intelligent creatures, seemingly just for the reactions.
  • While some Rift Wyrms are kinder and will only poke fun when it is harmless, others are actively malicious and will trick others into sustaining serious harm for their own amusement.
  • While they are almost universally tolerant of their own breed’s antics, Rift Wyrms can be quite picky when it comes to actual company.
  • Rift Wyrms often gather in massive numbers to mate, and prefer to do so in the depths of the oceans.
  • Rift Wyrms also seem to enjoy stretching themselves through many different locations, and are quite spatially aware of where they are at any given time relative to themselves.
  • A Rift Wyrm can drag other creatures or objects through their rifts, but if they are not trying to do so, anything else attempting to pass through finds that the rift behaves like a solid, immovable object.

Habitat

  • Rift Wyrms are naturally a deep-sea creature, nesting in lightless seafloor trenches.
  • However, at some point in their evolutionary history, they suddenly developed the ability to open rifts in space that ‘shortcut’ through other planes.
  • As a result, Rift Wyrms went from isolated in the depths of the ocean to being able to travel just about anywhere.
  • Recent adaptations have made them able to survive on land, though they still require a lot of hydration, and able to survive anything from a complete vacuum to seafloor pressure.
  • Rift Wyrm eggs can develop and hatch in any body of water, however small.
  • Rift Wyrms have even been seen popping out of a rift inside of buildings.

Diet

  • Rift Wyrms are strict carnivores.
  • They constrict and suffocate prey before swallowing it whole.
  • A single meal can keep a Rift Wyrm satiated for weeks or longer, depending on the relative size.
  • They are opportunistic and not terribly picky; their only limit seems to be that they will not eat other Rift Wyrms.

Trivia

  • While this dragon can always be found at Coast, it can also be found in one other habitat that changes randomly every hour. The Encyclopedia changes accordingly and can be used to check current Rift Wyrm habitats.
  • Before the official name for the Rift Wyrm was known, users called them "chills."
