Dragon Cave Wiki

Quantari Dragons were released on October 31, 2024, as part of Dragon Cave's 2024 Halloween event. As a limited-release dragon, they are only capable of producing more Quantari eggs during a brief period before Halloween is celebrated in October. They can still be bred year round, but will only produce their partner's breed of egg.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

You feel the weight of gravity grow heavier as you are pulled toward this molten egg.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. When it wants attention, it changes gravity to draw you closer.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. When it wants attention, it changes gravity to draw you closer.

And look! Its form has solidified! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Enigmatic, and feared far and wide, Quantari Dragons are said to descend from realms unknown to prey upon the vile and the wicked. These dragons manipulate space and time to immobilize and draw their targets closer, whereupon they rip a tear in the fabric of reality and pull the hapless victim inside. There are many unsubstantiated rumors as to where these portals lead, but one thing is for certain: those who are taken away are never seen again. Not even their restless spirits appear capable of finding their way back to this world...

Additional information[]

First, thank you so much for the overwhelming positive feedback to Bob's debut. We are delighted that you all enjoy Bobby as much as we do.

For all of you, I have some stories to share about the adventures of Bob.

"Bob" is short for "Spaceboi Bob", which was the passcode you needed to access our private (and now locked) archive of images, including the descriptions, moodboard, references images, and concept art. I made this archive back in May of this year, and I pitched it to Munin and Seventeendeer individually. When they agreed, I made a discord group for us, and we went to work.

Don't try to steal the name "Spaceboi Bob". Munin reserved it days ago. 😂

Interestingly, Bobby was originally inspired by the grim reaper. Bobby has a scythe on the tail and yoinks bad people into the unknown. I wanted to combine the horror of space with the horror of a soul-stealing monster. In addition, the whole idea of a black hole and the infinite expanse of space is very spooky to me. And thus, I made the first Bob draft and discussed design choices with Deer and Munin. You can see in the above images (that are spoilered due to being image heavy) that the head looked pretty different. I was inspired by the head shape of Death Sword, that one mini boss in the Arbiter's Grounds in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. He horrified me as a kid. If you don't like spooky, screamy, undead skeleton ghosts, don't look it up. lol

Now, of course, a full skeleton armor set wasn't really gonna fly. Pixel dragons are too small, and it would have been a nightmare for Munin and Deer. So, back to the drawing board. We had an ideation sesh where we tried to simplify some of the dragon's features in a way that would:

a) would not come off as "props" (items not actually part of the dragon, like the staff for white dragons, which is no longer allowed in sprites)

b) would still accentuate the spacey horror theme of Bob.

Deer contributed these idea pages of what could be added/changed to Bob.After studying her notes, I began to revisit Bob and make some pages that implemented some of the design changes we really liked. Namely, the head shape change, the chest's black hole, and lengthening the cosmic mane where it connects to the torso. And, I thickened/simplified the skeleton armor, so Munin and Deer don't perish during spriting. You can see Bobby really take shape in the second one, there.

If you ever think about doing a holiday collab with someone, please try to arrange it with buffer time, to accommodate for burnout and other emergencies. I think it was around this time that we had to take it really slow for a few months. Covid threw hands. Munin and I were both knocked out cold. 😭

Once we recovered, it was two months later and time for colors. I really wanted Bob to have bright hues, with colors that really make them pop. I knew from that get-go that I wanted a really shiny, sparkly creature. A prospective palette was made all the way back in May, but of course, putting it on a dragon is always another story. During concept coloring, I went ahead and drafted some possible poses to boot.

Deer's favorite color is pink, so I experimented with really strong pinks, reds, and purples.Ok, so searing-hot pink Bobby didn't work out. Sorry for burning your retinas. The purple, however, looked great. The third image, dubbed the "ballerina" was a pose idea that was shot down due to how funny Bob's footwork looked. Dance, little spaceboi, dance. 🩰 💃

Deer would then go on to convert that lineart into the bases for the two adults. Munin then took it and added grayscale shading and made adjustments according to private critiques from some other trusted in-cavers. Once the grayscale was done, I colored the sprites. Finally, Deer made refinements/cleanups and finalized them. During the spriting processes, some adjustments were made to suit dragcave standards and balance the dragon. For example, the skeletal armor is more gnarled, and the body is no longer nebula. Combining the random, chaotic glow of a nebula with a light source would have been way more work than necessary. Indeed, I think it was the right call.

I was put in charge of the egg and the babies. We looked at the process of how a star is formed, where gas comes together to form a superheated ball. It was Deer's idea for the egg and s1 hatchie to go from a star to a collapsed star, with the s1 as a newly-formed black hole. While I did the egg base, Munin did final touches and made the incredible custom hatching sequence.

And after some writing crits and adjustments by Deer, we got to the final step: The name. The working name this entire time was "Quantum dragon", and while that sounded cool, I'm pretty sure a lot of physics fans would have come for us for technically naming a dragon "a unit of energy".

I'm gonna name my next dragon Centimeter. 👌

And so, Quantari it is.

I should mention, if you want to make your own dragons for DragCave, this level/quantity of concept art is by no means required. We have some fantastic dragons that resulted from one mere sketch. It all depends on who you're working with and what works for you. For me, I just had a lot of fun drawing Bob.

And that's the story. 🪐☀️🕳️🌌

Team Bob is open to questions now, but please don't ask about sAlts. We don't have 'em yet, and we're not revealing the colors. You'll see them in due time. Good news, however, is that Team Bob had a discussion with Eden, and the Quantari will be added to the lineage builder very soon. In addition, the encyclopedia entry is in the works.
