Pink Dinos or Oviraptor philoceratops were released on September 29, 2024, alongside Kaikos Dragons.
Dinos are "non-dragon" creatures which do not have genders, and therefore cannot be bred. They also cannot be revived if killed. They come in six colors: Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple, and Pink.
Official descriptions[]
Egg[]
This egg looks like it doesn’t belong; it is glossy and covered with white spots.
Hatchling[]
You were right, it’s not the same species as the other eggs. So if it’s not a dragon, what is it?
Mature hatchling[]
You were right, it’s not the same species as the other eggs. So if it’s not a dragon, what is it?
And look, it’s gotten bigger! Maybe it will reach its full size soon.
Adult[]
Finally, after much feeding, your baby has grown into a full Dino! Dinos can eat almost anything, including things with spikes. In order to do so, they must have very tough stomachs. Pink Dinos are covered in soft feathers, which they use to keep their eggs nice and warm.

Hey everyone, spriter/conceptor behind the Pink Dinos here! Now that their species has been officially revealed over in the market and there are no more secrets to uncover, I’m back with more fun facts and trivia on our new goofy little unbreedables! ❤️
As many guessed early on, the Pink Dino is a reference to Birdetta, a supporting character from the Mario series, and the girlfriend of the character referenced by our other dinos, Yoshi! Birdetta (also known as Birdie, Birdo, or in her home country of Japan, Kyasarin/Catherine) was originally an enemy in older Mario titles, but in newer games she is often playable. First appearing in the game Doki Doki Panic in 1987, she is also one of gaming’s first canonically transgender characters!
After I finished up my first dragon request over on the public Dragon Requests board, I wanted to take a break from more involved concepts, so I decided I wanted to try to make a little dino. Dinos, being joke breeds, use a much simpler art/design style than dragons do, so it was a nice little buffer project between making proper dragon dragons. Since we haven't gotten any new dino releases in many years, despite lots of people submitting fun dino concepts, I decided to try something new and different, and so I based the design on Birdetta instead of Yoshi! The logic was basically - if our original dino breeds are funny because we expect to pick up a cool-looking dragon and instead end up raising a silly little Yoshi lookalike, then the Pink Dino would be funny because we pick up a dino egg expecting to raise a Yoshi lookalike and instead we get a Birdetta! I figured TJ felt releasing more Yoshi dinos was a moot point, since the original joke had already been made with our other 5 dinos. Iterating on the joke to create something new seemed the natural next step! (... and also I just really love Birdetta.)
I went through a couple of different ideas for which dinosaur species to use for this concept, but ultimately settled on oviraptor. Because so much time has passed since our last dino release, I thought it would be neat to use a feathered dinosaur for a fresh new concept, to sort of show in real time how popular perception of dinosaurs has changed. I also thought oviraptor would pair really well with the Birdetta reference, as the character’s main form of attack is shooting eggs at her enemies, and oviraptors are closely associated with eggs. Did you know this dinosaur was originally believed to eat eggs – its name even means "egg thief" – but it is now believed to have mostly eaten plant material, like nuts and fruit? It is also now actually believed to have been a doting parent to its own eggs, displaying brooding behaviors just like modern day chickens! This is what ended up inspiring the Pink Dino’s description.
With a character and a dinosaur in mind, I went on to the design phase! Here’s the idea board I put together as a reference when pitching the concept over in Dragon Requests:
(Top left: concept doodles by myself, top right: paleoart of oviraptor by Wikipedia contributor PaleoNeolitic, bottom left: our older in-cave dino sprites, bottom right: official Nintendo art of Birdetta.)
After a couple of weeks and lots of helpful feedback from the lovely artists in our community, the concept went to the completed section. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really expect I’d ever see the sweet little gal go live, since new rare releases are so few and far between, and it had been over a decade since we last saw a new unbreedable release … but it turned out the Pink Dino would become my in-cave debut just a few months later!
I’m absolutely over the moon about this release. It’s been amazing fun to see my own work make it into a game I’ve been playing since the distant year of 2008. I also cannot think of a funnier way I could have possibly made my debut as an in-cave spriter. If I could have picked one concept from all the dragon requests I’ve made over the past year and a half to release, this would be it. For the joke. For the bit. For the funnies. For the chance to spread a little mayhem.
Some more random fun facts, for those who hunger to know all the deets:
The last time a dino was released on DC was in July 2009, 15 years ago. It was the Purple Dino, featuring artwork by Marrionetta, AnimeJet and Shikaru. It was released alongside the Cheese Dragon, with the pair being the last unbreedables released until now.
- The last time a release which was near-unanimously considered truly "rare" by players was released was in 2020, 4 years ago. It was the Staterae Xenowyrm, created by birdzgoboom. However, DC rarities are not technically an official feature and which breeds count as "rare" is up for debate ... and also, considering how often the other dinos drop in the cave, it's highly unlikely the Pink Dino will be anywhere near as hard to come by as a Stat.
- Though Shikaru is no longer in the DC community, they left blanket permission to use their sprites for DC related projects (with credit). I recolored and edited their dino hatchling sprites to create the Pink Dino hatchlings, to keep consistency with our original dinos. This is why Shikaru appears in the credits even though they’re not around anymore. I hope if Shikaru ever sees the Pink Dino, they’ll like what I’ve done with it. ^u^
- Though he goes uncredited, the egg sprite is a recolor of the standard dino egg sprite created by the man himself, TJ09! Similar to Shikaru, he has given blanket permission for people to recolor the dino egg sprite, for dino concepts specifically.
- As I mentioned above, there’s been quite a lot of dino concepts submitted in the past that never made it into the game. Apparently, some other people have even made their own Pink Dinos before! Though I’ve asked around, it doesn’t seem like anyone has made a dino based on Birdetta before, however, which is why I decided to go ahead and do my own version anyway. Maybe those who made Pink Dinos before would like to recolor theirs and resubmit? I'll always hold out hope we get more dinos and I'd so love to see their work make it in-cave someday too!!
- At the height of day 1 of the release, over 400 people were camping out in the Jungle trying to snatch a Pink Dino. This may be the most amount of people trying to click the same 3 egg sprites since before biomes were implemented.
- Early on during the release, a glitch caused the Pastel Dragons (which were released last month) to flood the Alpine by mistake. Since the Pink Dino is based on a transgender character and the Pastels are DC’s first dragon breed which does not conform to the gender binary, I think that’s kind of cute – it’s like they came out to cheer on their trans sisters! I’ve named my own glitch Pastel “Kyasarin’s Entourage.”
- On that note, I managed to grab the name “Kyasarin” (Birdetta’s original name in Japanese) for one of my own Pink Dinos. That’s not really a fun fact about the release, I just thought it was cool …
On a final note, I just want to extend a massive “thank you” to everyone who made this release something special. It was one of the most hectic and controversial DC releases in recent memory, which made it all the sweeter to see people gifting and raffling away their extras, cheering up those who were down in the dumps about it, making memes and keeping the hype train going. And of course, shout-out to our mods for working overtime to keep things tidy!! Sorry my candy-pink pool toy creature set fire to the whole website. Your efforts are extremely appreciated. Hopefully things will quiet down for a while now. 😅
Last but not least, thank you to TJ for continuing to run this wonderful game after all these years, and for letting me contribute to it. Here’s to hopefully many more years of DragonCave!! 🥳🎉
