Name

The "Name" page.

Naming is an action that applies a name to a creature, which replaces its italicized character string. The action is available to all species in any stage besides eggs. Leetle Trees, despite being considered frozen eggs, are now also able to be named. This same function can also be used to rename a dragon or creature (or to remove its name entirely) and can be found on the dragon or creature's Actions page.

If the user puts a name in the field, a small X will appear beside the box if the name is invalid in some way, while a valid name will have a ✓ beside it. To remove a dragon or creature's name, simply submit a blank name. Releasing a dragon will result in its name being removed before it enters the Wilderness. However, a creature that is killed before it's renamed will retain the name, and that name will become unavailable forever.

Users can name their dragons whatever they want, as long as the name is within certain character parameters and follows DC's rule on appropriate names. A name that breaks this rule may result in the death of the dragon. Other consequences, such as loss of the naming ability, may also be put into play if the infraction is serious enough. Those unsure whether or not a potential name is appropriate can inquire in the Name Check Thread on the forum.

Naming Rules

  • No two dragons or creatures can have the same name (change in capitalization makes no difference).
  • Only letters (A-Z, a-z), numbers, spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes are allowed in a name. In the case of hyphens and apostrophes, the name cannot contain em dashes, en dashes, or curly apostrophes. Those will be deemed invalid characters.
  • Using spaces or punctuation at the beginning or end of a name won't be accepted.
  • There is a 32-character limit for names.

Naming Messages

Message after submitting invalid characters.

There are four results when submitting a new name or removing the name of a creature.

If a name is already taken, the following message will appear when using the action:

"You try to write the name, but the ink disappears as you write, so you decide to try something else."

Below it is a message saying names must be unique.

If using invalid characters, the following message will appear when using the action:

"You try to write the name, but some characters disappear as you write, so you decide to try something else."

Below it is an explanation of which characters submitted are invalid.

If successfully able to name or rename, the following message will appear when using the action:

"You write the name next to your dragon's picture in the scroll."

If the user successfully removes the dragon or creature's name, the following message will appear when using the action:

"You cross out <NAME>'s name on your scroll."
