Mistletoe Dragons, or Holiday 2014 Dragons, are the all-female Holiday dragon released during the Holidays of 2014. As a limited-release dragon, they are only capable of producing more Mistletoe eggs during a brief period when the Holidays are celebrated in December. They can still be bred to all year round, producing the partner's breed of egg. Each scroll is limited to 2 cave-born dragons of this breed, like all other Holiday dragons.

While cave-born Misteltoes are limited to being female only, bred Mistletoes can be either male or female. This was discovered during the Holidays of 2015, where the spriters revealed this was intended to mimic what occurred with Holly Dragons[1].

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Holiday dragons are a very mysterious breed. They are only seen during winter, and even then it is hard to catch a glimpse of one. They are responsible for the general cheer that spreads during the holidays. In essence, they are the “Spirits of Winter.”

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • They have a tuft of coarse fur at the end of their tail that resembles a sprig of mistletoe.
  • Solid spheres of ice adorn their tail-tufts, formed subconsciously by magic.
  • Their wings resemble the northern sky, aurora-like patterns covering the membrane.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Hatchlings seem to have a very bright and cheerful demeanor.
  • They are born with the tuft of fur that grows with them into adulthood.
  • From a very early age, hatchlings exhibit power over temperature and ice.
  • They share a food and trinkets with some of the other hatchlings.
  • They can fly pretty well once their wings have grown in, seemingly born with the ability.

Adult Behavior

  • Seem to have control over temperature in a small radius around themselves, able to easily warm and cool things down.
  • They can create and manipulate frost and ice in such a way that, although it is solid water, it does not feel cool to the touch due to magic that creates a sort of temperature-neutralizing “wall” around the ice.
  • The pieces of frost on their tails regulate body temperature by absorbing excess heat; although magic enchants them to feel room-temperature, they are truly cold. This method of temperature regulation reduces the magical energy an individual must expend.
  • When the balls of ice on their tails fall off, they seldom melt, staying frozen for years and years.
  • They often decorate their dens with enchanted ice, crafting glassy, frozen walls.
  • Inherently friendly and commonly allow those seeking refuge to share their homes for a short time, giving these guests food and shelter.
  • They tend to give gifts of food to the hungry and often present companions with small tokens of friendship, such as never-melting ice crystals.
  • Due to their rarity and tendency to disappear outside of winter, a tradition has arisen in some human cultures to cherish a sighting, often with a hug in honor of the breed’s amiable tendencies.

Habitat

  • Due to their temperature-controlling magic, they can really be found anywhere. They prefer to live in spacious caverns and abandoned dens, however.
  • They often encase the walls of their homes with glassy, never-melting ice.
  • Sometimes live with humans in villages. They are sought after in times of extreme heat or bitter cold to help regulate towns’ climates.

Diet

  • They typically stick to eating plant matter, but possess omnivorous digestive tracts so that they can consume meat in times of desperation.
  • Sometimes, they dig up large roots and tubers to chew on, mostly to pass time.

Trivia[]

  • For the first few seconds of their initial release, the eggs lacked descriptions in the biomes.
  • On August 20, 2017, this dragon's adult sprite was updated as part of site-wide changes, though this was unannounced in the official news post.
  • Under the legacy breed sort, these dragons sort as "Christmas 2014 Dragon" on a user's scroll. As of August 14, 2016, they sort using their Encyclopedia name of "Holiday Dragon (2014)".

A little bit of breed information:

Mistletoe Dragons possess magic over temperature, able to raise and lower the temperature in a small radius around them. This allows them to stay warm during winter and cool during summer. They also have slight control over frost, able to create ice and enchant it so that it is room temperature to the touch. They often decorate their dens—usually made in caves—with this enchanted frost.

Their temperature control allows them to regulate the temperatures of their dens, which makes them ideal to seek out during the winter. Hospitable and friendly, Mistletoes often welcome strangers and those in need into their homes. Mistletoes are very kind, and are known for giving gifts of food to the hungry and assisting others when possible.

The long, course fur on their tails often becomes matted in a way that resembles a sprig of mistletoe, hence the breed name. They use their tails as a means of body temperature regulation, focusing their magic energy on that area to allow heat to escape (or to generate warmth) rather than expend energy on warming/cooling their entire bodies. Often, small ice crystals form on their tail fur that resemble the white berries of mistletoe. These sometimes fall off, but stay enchanted with the dragon’s magic and never melt.

They are a somewhat rare sight to see flying overhead, as they are typically only seen in the depths of winter. A tradition has arisen among many humans to hug nearby friends and cherish the moment when one is seen, both to honor the breed’s amiable tendencies and to express excitement at the rare sighting.

They are an herbivorous breed that avoids harming others whenever possible.

Stay tuned! More (possibly) to come through the encyclopedia. If we can fit all this and more in the entry.
