Adult[]

With their iridescent wings and sleek gray bodies, Iridichi Dragons are an enchanting sight to behold in the decaying autumnal world. Coming across an Iridichi, or having one approach you, can either be a blessing or a curse; rumor has it, Iridichi Dragons are messengers and anchors for the dead. Their disconcerting white eyes always seem to connect to the spiritual world, and the intimacy of life and death during autumn compels them to seek the deceased. Superstitious folks claim that the magical effects of their wings allow the dead to be seen as well as heard. As a result, travelers seek out Iridichi Dragons during their most active season, claiming they act as a bridge between the living and the dead. Iridichi Dragons have allegedly facilitated hauntings and offered consolation for those departed with unfinished business when a simple message will not suffice.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

Medium sized dragon with sleek bodies that allow for quick, fluid movement whether it is dry or precipitating.
Some people claim the colors of an Iridichi’s wings appear more vibrant when the viewer is about to die.
As the iridescence of their wings develop while they grow, the range of the magical effects of their wings increase.

Hatchling Behavior

Iridichi hatchlings enjoy playing hide and seek, but they also think that includes objects in addition to living things.
Although they enjoy playing games and tricks on people, they are not sociable outside their small groups unless they feel the need to tell one something.
There is a rumor that as hatchlings begin to practice using their magic, they are drawn to children or deceased pets.
Soon after emerging from their egg, hatchlings use their magic to communicate through sound and light wavelengths.
Iridichi hatchlings have a fascination with bones and decayed items that belonged to those long since departed that eventually lead to the items they collect as adults.

Adult Behavior

Iridichi love overcast weather and can often be seen after rain or thunderstorms.
Ghost stories are their favorite to listen to and tell, especially if they are somehow involved. You cannot always tell if the story is true or not, though.
Their social and family groups tend to be small and closely knit, but they are frequently by themselves or with the dead outside of scattered gatherings.
Iridichi collect memento mori, the most treasured of which have a story that stirs strong emotions in the Iridichi who owns it.
Some who encounter Iridichi walk away feeling at peace or happy while others seem to lose their sanity or are overcome with guilt and fear.
When courting, an Iridichi may give their desired mate their favorite memento mori as a symbol of their trust and affection.
Stealing from an Iridichi usually results in them haunting you or unfortunate non fatal accidents until what was stolen is reacquired.
Iridichi have been known to find vast family fortunes thought lost or hidden, and people say it is because they overhear the dead say where they put it.

Habitat

Iridichi tend to be found in places the dead are said to congregate such as cemeteries, prisons, bodies of water, travelers’ paths, and places in nature with special meaning.
When mating or finding a place to rest, Iridichi prefer areas slightly damp or windy.

Diet

Iridichi are omnivores.
The preference for vegetation or animals is up to the individual, although any Iridichi is more likely to eat an animal that annoys them.
When hunting animals for food, they swallow their prey whole or use their tail to render it unconscious first.

I don't see why Halloween dragons have to be all dark and menacing. The lore makes them very appropriate as a Halloween dragon and I am glad to see something truly different for the holiday.
That was exactly why. As much as I love the dragons we have, I wanted one that is more Halloween in their lore with aspects reflected in their appearance making them possible to be more subtly spooky rather than scary. There’s plenty of traditions and beliefs surrounding Halloween that involves things not necessarily evil.

I combined a form of Iris, like the Greek rainbow messenger goddess with chi meaning the energy of life force. It was to combine rainbows as symbols of messages and linking the earthly and heavenly/spiritual planes with the energy of life as well as the inevitability of death surrounding us.
