Glystere Wyrms are an all-male breed, released on December 25, 2020 as part of the 2020 Holiday event. As a limited-release dragon, they are only capable of producing more Glystere eggs during a brief period when the Holidays are celebrated in December. They can still be bred year round, producing the female's breed of egg. Each scroll is limited to 2 cave-born dragons of this breed, like all other Holiday dragons.

Adult Glystere Wyrms have a Breed Specific Action called "Redecorate" which changes the colored lights along the wyrm's body. The action has a 24 hour cooldown, and the dragons' light patterns follow a fixed rotation (multi-colored, red and green, red and yellow, and all yellow).

Official descriptions[]

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It tends to blend into your festive decor.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It tends to blend into your festive decor.

And look! It’s grown fins and ice has formed down its belly! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Glystere Wyrms spend most of the year deep in arctic seas. As winter approaches, these dragons will emerge from beneath the ice to congregate midair in search of a mate, where the glitter of mana crystals down their bodies can be seen as they fly across the night sky. Glystere Wyrms are known to take a respite from flying by looping around trees, over homes, or across high-hanging cliff edges while entwined with others of their kind. The colorful light of their mana crystals and the icicles formed down their undersides often leads them to be mistaken for festive decor when at rest. Traveling with friends and families to find the most brilliant display of these wyrms has become a steadfast tradition during the holiday season.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Long, serpentine bodies that wind side-to-side.
  • Overall, not very big dragons—roughly the size of a horse when they mature, though they will continue to grow in length as they age.
  • Has a short bristly mane of fur down the spine that collects algae while underwater. This algae turns the hair the color of a blue spruce tree, and makes the mane smell like fresh pine needles when out of water.
  • Icicles naturally form on the bodies of these wyrms when they emerge from the sea during the winter. This helps keep their core temperature lower when in the air. Underwater, their undersides are bare and smooth.
  • Have both a set of gills and a set of lungs that allow them to seamlessly transition between a fully submerged aquatic environment and becoming airborne.
  • Their large, smooth scales are almost glass-like in texture and nearly impenetrable. These are very cold to the touch.
  • The size of the mana crystal deposits along their bodies vary between individuals, and the color may change depending on the abundance of a particular mana type in their diet.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Newly hatched Glystere Wyrms tend to burrow into snow banks in order to keep cool. Because they sit so still, they can be mistaken for decorative figurines.
  • Glystere hatchlings will wrap their tails around other hatchlings or dragons for security and hold onto them when sleeping.
  • Once a Glystere hatchling’s fins have grown in, they take to jumping off ledges into large snow piles and sliding down steep hills to help simulate flight.
  • Often gregarious and playful by nature, they will invite other small creatures and hatchlings to partake in their sliding activities, though the slippery ice that forms on their undersides gives them an advantage.
  • Follow the lights of adult Glystere Wyrms in order to find the sea once winter draws to an end.

Adult Behavior

  • Spend most of their time underwater, where they communicate primarily with the flashing lights of their mana crystals. Only when winter approaches do these dragons become vocal.
  • The beginning of winter is typically marked by these dragons using their horns to break the ice of the seas they dwell in and then rising from the water and into the air.
  • The calls of a Glystere Wyrm are very low in pitch; so deep that some creatures cannot hear it.
  • Glystere Wyrms will fly for miles from shore in search of a mate. As this travel can be exhausting, they tend to make frequent stops throughout the season wherever they can fit—roof tops, trees, cliff ledges, tall bushes, and sometimes on other dragons.
  • Glystere travel in pairs, if not more; this helps keep them safe during their journey as they look out for one another. A lone Glystere will make fast friends with any dragon that lets them hold on with their tails while sleeping.
  • The way a Glystere Wyrm determines a mate is unknown, but they will bestow gifts of food and shiny trinkets upon their chosen mate once their decision has been made.
  • Decorating a Glystere Wyrm’s horns is taken as a sign of deep and unyielding affection. Some may try to return the favor!

Habitat

  • Glystere Wyrms require cold climates at all times; if they become too warm, it can affect their ability to move.
  • The rest of a Glystere’s life is spent far below the arctic sea, though if temperatures remain close to freezing above the surface, they may occasionally rise.
  • Glystere eggs are usually stowed among ice, such as below frozen surfaces of lakes, ponds, or deposited within pockets carved into glaciers.
  • Below the sea, Glystere Wyrms do not keep dens; they anchor themselves to coral, rocks, and other Glystere Wyrms in large groups to establish their territory.
  • They prefer open space to cramped areas without room to move freely around.

Diet

  • For a majority of the year, these dragons feed on plankton, krill, jellyfish, and any mana deposits they can find.
  • When winter approaches, their appetites change to more substantial and fatty foods, such as fish or blubbery mammals. This helps keep a store of energy for when they transition to flight.
  • Out of the water, wyrms will scavenge on birds where possible. Very rarely do they take down large prey, though they tend to share this with others when it does happen.
  • They are attracted to the glow of raw mana in or out of water and will eagerly consume as much as they can in one sitting. The type of mana does not matter; all of it is digested the same.

Trivia[]

  • TJ09 secured Glystere Wyrms with the codes prtty and lghts for the announcement thread.
