Winter Seasonal Dragons were released on December 21, 2008. They were the third form of Seasonal Dragon to be released.

Like other Seasonal Dragons, the availability of this form is dependent on the seasons in Valkemare, with Winter Seasonals only produced between the December solstice and the March equinox. Breeding a Winter Seasonal Dragon during any other season will produce the variant aligned with that season.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

The markings on this egg match the weather outside.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It perfectly depicts winter weather.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It perfectly depicts winter weather.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Seasonal Dragons take on the characteristics of the season during which they are born. Thus, eggs that are laid in spring match the pink flowers and green buds of spring, and those that are laid in the summer grow to depict the bright green of the forest trees and the yellow of the sun. Eggs laid in autumn display the bright colors of leaves falling from trees, and those that are laid during winter take on the appearance of the icy snow.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Winter Seasonals are sturdy, average-sized dragons with fine ice-blue scales; deep blue underwings, multi-pointed tail spades, and neck frills; and subtle crystal-blue head crests.
  • Their scales, some of which look like simple snowflakes, are subtly iridescent.
  • A Winter’s broad wings are wide enough to fly even in the cold winter air.
  • A Winter’s shimmery crystal-blue head crest is hard and bony, protecting the dragon’s face. The dark blue frill that runs along the back of the neck is more fragile, and is rather long and droops a bit.
  • While male Winters have two sets of prongs extending from their head crest, females have a single, larger set.
  • These dragons have large eyes in varying shades of dark blue and violet, rarely green, with round pupils.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Winter hatchlings are deeply affectionate, and can often be found piled up with their friends, nuzzling and grooming each other and rarely ever wandering off alone.
  • Adolescent Winter fledglings can be seen gliding on the wind. They seem to enjoy catching snow flurries on the breeze as they fly past.
  • Newly-hatched Winterss can be shy at first, but quickly take delight in cuddling and playing.
  • As hatchlings, they are drawn to smooth, rounded rocks, which they may bring to show their parent or caretaker, or merely gather up with their friends.
  • Adolescent Winters are much more independent than young hatchlings, but still quite friendly, and they learn to fly early on.
  • The amount of snow they are exposed to as they grow up affects the amount of deep blue and the iridescent sheen of the coloration of growing Winters, and as adults, one can determine whether they grew up with cold winters.

Adult Behavior

  • Winter Seasonals are most active in springtime [sic], and are rather friendly dragons.
  • Winters live in moderately-sized family groups, ranging from eight to twenty-five adult dragons and their young hatchlings.
  • If an area gets too crowded, the family groups will break off and seek out new territory, as they are territorial, but not particularly violent.
  • Winters spend a lot of time snuggling affectionately and grooming each other, and tend to be rather unhappy if entirely alone for extended periods.
  • In late winter, individual groups of Winters aggregate into massive herds to find mates and stake out new nesting territory in preparation for the summer.
  • When the massive herd disperses, the territories are re-established for the coming year, and young adults form new groups to keep the cycle going.

Habitat

  • Winter Seasonals gravitate towards forested mountains as their ideal habitat.
  • The cold, deep winter snows are ideal for the health of these dragons.
  • Winters aestivate over the summer, living off stored fat and becoming largely inactive.
  • They tend to nest in high-elevation valleys, where they can be assured of deep snowdrifts to burrow into.

Diet

  • Winter Seasonals are largely herbivorous, grazing on conifer needles, mosses and lichens, and woody twigs as a primary food source.
  • They also dig into frozen ponds to eat the algae and aquatic plants, and will dig into decayed logs to find beetles.
  • Winters, like other Seasonals, will opportunistically raid nests of smaller creatures if they happen across them, eating eggs, but do not actively hunt and are unlikely to scavenge from large carcasses.
  • Winters are also known to stash away fruits and seeds in the fall, and come back to their caches to eat the frozen, occasionally fermented treats much later.

Trivia[]

  • Before the Dimorphism change on March 26, 2010 both genders of these dragons appeared as the male sprites.
  • Under Legacy Breed Sort, Seasonals are ordered chronologically: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
