Mariner Pygmies were released on April 27, 2019, alongside Skysilk Dragons.

Like other Pygmy dragons, they cannot be bitten by Vampire Dragons, and can only be bred with other pygmies.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

This tiny egg smells like the sea.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It stares longingly across the sea.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It stares longingly across the sea.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Mariner pygmies do not venture often to any mainland, preferring to lead their lives spread across the ocean’s multitude of small islands. They can soar for great distances with little effort, stopping only as necessary to rest. Mariners feed mostly on fish, sharing large catches with the rest of the colony. Pairs mate for life and usually remain in the same colony; when the colony becomes too large, it begins to split, and the smaller groups relocate to distant islands.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Mariner Pygmies are primarily white, with black upperwings and black patches on the underside of the wing.
  • Their tails are tipped with a small fan of six large, black feathers, and they have a short black feather crest on their heads.
  • They have black scales on their throats that they can extend, usually to display for mates.
  • Their have a wingspan at least as wide as their bodies are long.
  • They tend to be lean and low to the ground.
  • Their bodies are covered with feathers that are very oily, so when they dive, they remain dry.
  • Hatchlings are mainly white, with medium grey on their wings.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Hatchlings take several months to fledge, and are dependent on their parents for food and care until then.
  • Mariner hatchlings are skittish and dart into the shadows whenever they feel threatened.
  • Once they have fledged, they begin to learn to swim before they fly, so that they can learn to catch fish.
  • Hatchlings typically stay together in groups and huddle together for warmth when their parents are out hunting.

Adult Behavior

  • Mariner pygmies can take flight from both land and water.
  • They make loud, shrill vocalizations to call out to one another. Each colony has a unique call so they can recognize friends and family on the wing.
  • Most of their lives are spent on the wing, soaring across the ocean with little effort. They only see each other when returning to their islands to rest or mate.
  • Mariners often mate for life, identifying their beloved by the unique pattern of wing blotches and tail stripes.
  • They are curious and bold; their far-ranging flights take them all over, and they may meet many different types of dragon.

Habitat

  • Though they can be found on any island, they are rare in warm regions.
  • Mariners prefer small islands untouched by people and other dragons. They prefer archipelagos so the colony can spread out across several islands.
  • Their favorite islands tend to be mostly rocky or sandy.
  • Depending on the island, mariners will dig a sandy hollow for their eggs or simply lay them on bare rock.

Diet

  • Mariners eat fish almost exclusively.
  • They will dive from sometimes great heights into the water to snag fish.
  • Especially large fish are taken back to the colony to share, or shared with other mariners in the area if it’s too heavy to carry.
