Blancblack Dragons were released on March 10, 2019, alongside Aqualis Dragons. Like all two-headed dragons, they can only breed with other two-headed breeds, and their eggs cannot be bitten by Vampire Dragons.

Breeding a Blancblack Dragon with a Bauta Dragon may produce a hybrid Jester Dragon.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

This egg is dark with light speckles...or maybe it’s light with dark speckles?

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its two heads seem to prefer different things.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its two heads seem to prefer different things.

And look! It grew a mane, and its colors have become more contrasting! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Blancblack dragons are a two-headed breed known for their hardiness and easygoing nature. They are omnivorous, with the cream head preferring to eat plants and the violet head preferring to eat meat, and can adjust readily to harsh climates. These dragons are sociable—both with other two-headed breeds and with single-headed dragons—and can often be found as adopted members of social dragon colonies. They are often considered symbols of balance and fairness, and likenesses of Blancblacks have been found in ancient ruins associated with law and justice. Females Blancblacks have longer tails than males, which they use as whips when defending a nest from predators.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • One side of the dragon is black with a deep purple sheen, with pastel cream fawn spots; the other is pastel cream, with purple-tinged black spots mirroring the other side.
  • In most Blancblacks, the white head has teeth suited for consuming plants, branching horns that curve up, and purple eyes.
  • The black head has sharp, serrated carnivore teeth, branching horns that curve down, and yellow eyes.
  • Blancblacks have thick dark gray manes, tough leathery hide, and light gray scutes that protect their undersides from dangerous terrain.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Newly-hatched Blancblacks have more muted coloration, but the divide between the two colors is already present.
  • Occasionally, an egg will hatch into a double-white or double-black Blancblack, but they generally fail to thrive and die early.
  • Young Blancblacks tend to quickly learn to deal with each other and become quite social and friendly.
  • A Blancblack hatchling raised around other dragons or creatures will be even more amiable, and they have been known to bring home various animals to their caretakers and ask to keep them as pets.
  • As Blancblacks approach maturity, their colors become more distinct, and so do their disparate preferences.
  • Blancblacks may stay with their parent or caretaker into maturity, or decide to wander off as late adolescents.

Adult Behavior

  • Blancblacks are social and highly agreeable.
  • While their two heads tend to have very different preferences, they are naturally good at compromise and mediation, and rarely fight.
  • When a Blancblack does get into an argument, whether between the two heads or with another creature, they tend to stay very civil.
  • Blancblacks will be friendly towards any creature they can communicate with, but will flee if they sense hostility.
  • Blancblacks will generally not stand their ground in the face of violent aggression, but a female guarding a nest will use her tail as a whip to try to dissuade attackers.

Habitat

  • Blancblacks can survive just about anywhere: as generalist omnivores who can survive a wide range of temperatures, it is harder to find somewhere they can’t thrive.
  • However, Blancblacks tend to be outcompeted by specialists in more resource-rich environments.
  • As a result, the populations are highest in volcanic regions, deserts, high altitudes, anywhere marked by scarcity.
  • Blancblacks face little competition in such regions and so tend to do very well.

Diet

  • Blancblacks are omnivorous.
  • Both heads feel satiated if either eats, and so they don’t tend to get into fights over food.
  • Blancblacks are predatory, but tend to prefer to eat small prey such as rabbits over larger prey, and so typically find humans to be too large to be worth the effort.
  • The black head of a Blancblack will consume most prey and meat the dragon catches, while the white head will choose to graze on tender plants and fruits the dragon encounters.
  • As a result, if either prey or vegetation is scarce, the dragon can still survive, one head will simply not eat until their food of choice returns.

Additional information[]

-The design that I used for them is a reimagining of an old, long-dead DR thread that was called the Duality Dragon.
-The name means white-black--Blanc is French for white.
-It's also a subtle nod to this game called The Gray Garden.
-They're based off the concept of yin and yang being in balance with each other. As white = yang = the masculine aspect and black = yin = the feminine aspect, that's why I insisted on the sprites being swapped to their intended state instead of just leaving it.
-In the vast majority of cases, a BB's white head identifies as male, the black head identifies as female, one head is slightly dominant and can overrule the other's control in the (VERY rare) instances they disagree, and what they count as for breeding matches the gender of the dominant head. Any of these not being true for an individual BB is quite rare, but not impossible.
-Female BBs grow noticeably larger and have longer tails they use as whips when defending a nest.
-BB populations tend to do well in harsh climates due to their generalist omnivore strategy and the relative lack of competition in extreme locations. That said, they greatly enjoy milder climates as well.
-BBs are very social, and while they're hardy and can survive with only their other head for company, they only really thrive in groups. Even more introverted BBs who need some alone time to recharge get very lonely if they never interact with others.
