Adult[]

The Elux Lucis are a nocturnal breed of dragon found in the far north and at the peaks of particularly tall mountain ranges. During the day, their deep indigo scales easily conceal them among the trees, but at night, their remarkable iridescence is revealed; even the faintest starlight reflects off of their bodies in a dazzling display of colors. In flight, they almost resemble living auroras soaring across the night sky. During the winter, flocks of Elux Lucis fly south to hatch and raise their young. This annual migration is well known for filling the night sky with a display of reflected moonlight and starlight so vibrant it seems as though the northern lights themselves have wandered south.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

Lindwyrms that have deep indigo scales flecked with white.
Their tail, elbow, and cheek fluff is composed of dense downy feathers that are very insulating.
The frill along their spine is flexible, and a larger, deeper black frill is considered more attractive.
During the day, Elux Lucis rest in trees, cliffside caves, or any other elevated yet shady perch they can fit into.
Their scales are a dull matte indigo during the day, which hides them will in the shadows.
At night, their scales shift to their full iridescent glory, and an Elux Lucis flying against the night sky almost looks like a dragon made entirely of light.
Their eyes range from silver, gold, midnight blue, deep black, and can even be a similar iridescent color to their scales.

Hatchling Behavior

Elux Lucis hatchlings are sleepy and lethargic during the day.
During the night, they are active and playful.
Hatchlings are inquisitive, and will often cling to an adult and watch everything they do, as they cannot fly while their underdeveloped wings are still covered.
An Elux Lucis hatchling in trouble will cry loudly for its parents, and attempt to wrap itself around a potential attacker’s neck.
Juvenile Elux Lucis have their wings exposed during a shed, and start learning to fly almost immediately.
They remain close to their parents until fully mature, and continue to recognize them into adulthood.

Adult Behavior

Adults are just as lethargic during the day as hatchlings, and unless threatened, are difficult to rouse until the sun begins to set.
Elux Lucis spend much of the night gliding around in search of food, usually in close-knit groups that share a wide territory.
While territorial, Elux Lucis are generally not violent to intruders, but may defend a claim through ritualistic aerial wrestling to try to bind each others’ wings. The loser will back down gracefully.
The dragons are generally peaceful, and even their territory bounds are ignored when winter comes, as the colder temperatures allow them to migrate towards the equator.
Elux Lucis typically mate early into migration, and hatch and raise their young in the milder winters closer to the equator.
Once the young develop a cold tolerance like the adults, they migrate back to their territory before the temperatures warm up too much.

Habitat

Elux Lucis inhabit very cold areas, typically high altitude mountains that retain glaciers year-round and the extreme poles.
These dragons are very well adapted to the cold, with blood that never freezes, a low body temperature that still allows them to function, and lungs that retain moisture in cold, dry air.
Warm temperatures make them tired and sluggish, and they can easily overheat in direct sunlight.
Once an Elux Lucis becomes accustomed to a winter nest as an adult, they will return to it every night unless forced to leave their territory.
Elux Lucis can swim in frigid waters, and can hold their breath surprisingly well.

Diet

Elux Lucis are omnivorous, but strongly prefer foraging for plants.
The meat they do consume is usually scavenged, hunting is usually saved for desperate times.
Sugary or fatty foods are a treat these dragons will go to great lengths to enjoy.
Despite their usual preference for cold, Elux Lucis are very fond of warm or cooked foods.
Elux Lucis have been known to carry messages for humans in exchange for baked goods still warm from the oven.
