15th Birthday Release
It's time to wish a happy 15 years to Dragon Cave. That's a crazy amount of time, and to celebrate we've prepared a bunch of new alt mechanics for existing breeds. As you can certainly tell, there's a lot of eggs in this post, so here's some hints:
- The Sapphires have received two new alts; one from lonely eggs and the other from those that receive a lot of attention.
- The Coppers have a shiny new alt you can get from breeding in the right way.
- A new hybrid is here. Its colors may be a blend of its parents.
- Electric Dragons have a new alt. Which BSA you use to obtain it may shock you.
- Three new colors of Gemshards have arrived, but they also have a new time-based mechanic—except for one day when chaos reigns supreme.
- Two new alts for the Cantormaris Dragons come from two new BSAs.
- Nilias also have a breed-only alt, from particularly fertile parents.
- And finally, the Florets. Make sure to grab the fully new variant from the jungle, but there's certainly more to be discovered.

Sapphire alternates release

Egg | File:Sapphire egg yellow.gif | This egg looks like a beautiful blue stone. | – |
Hatchling | File:Sapphire hatchi yellow.png | Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It’s a brilliant blue-green color. | Infinis, Shajana |
Mature hatchling | File:Sapphire mature hatchling yellow.png | Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It’s a brilliant blue-green color.
And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing. |
Infinis, Shajana |
Adult | File:Sapphire adult yellow.png | Sapphire Dragons were so named for their brilliant blue-green color, which is reminiscent of the gemstone. This breed was historically hunted for their scales; even long after, they remain distrustful of humans. Normally a Sapphire is not very aggressive, but they will defend themselves vigorously if under attack. Their diet consists mainly of fruit, with smaller portions of large insects and other invertebrates. Males woo females with vocalizations similar to bird songs. Sapphire Dragons are very loyal to their mates, and it is not unusual that they pair for life. | Infinis, Shajana |
Additional information
Fact:
- These eggs are alternate forms of Sapphire Dragons.
- Players can get "one from lonely eggs and the other from those that receive a lot of attention." [1]
- The pink variant is created when the egg is abandoned willingly.[2][3] Auto-abandoning the egg does not turn it pink.[4]
- The yellow variant is created when the egg or hatchling gets a lot of views.[5]
Rumor:
- Pink hatchlings that have exceeded 4k views have remained pink. Abandoned yellow eggs stay yellow. Color looks to be locked once turned.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing. |
Fiona BlueFire, Nakase |
Adult | File:Copper adult male 4.png | Copper Dragons are masters of stealth, slipping silently and swiftly through the forests and jungles where they live. Often hunting in groups, their prey rarely know they are being stalked until the dragon’s at their throat. In the air they are agile and skilled. Copper Dragons prize family groups, spending large amounts of time teaching their young skills. So great is their love of life and family that they will sometimes adopt orphaned dragons of other breeds to raise. | Fiona BlueFire, Nakase |
Additional information
Fact:
- This release is a new variant of Copper Dragons.
- The variant can be produced by "breeding in the right way."[1]
- The new variant can be obtained by breeding a Copper with Thunder Dragons, Electric Dragons, Bolt Dragons, or Astrapi Xenowyrms.[6][7][8][9]
- In addition to a new variant, existing Copper Dragons received a shading update.
- The new Copper variant is called Pennybright by artist Fiona.[10]
Rumor:
- The new variant appears to be produced by breeding with primarily Lightning aligned breeds. It is unknown whether breeds with a secondary Lightning alignment will also produce the variant.

Mature hatchling | File:Birthday 2021 hybrid male hatchling.png | Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It carries itself with dignity and poise, despite just hatching.
And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing. |
Dohaerys, Shiny Hazard Sign |
Adult | The union of two royal breeds brings the pinnacle of majesty: the Royal Eminence Dragon. Named for the crown-like ornamentation of their horns and the rich, lustrous purple of their hide, these large, regal dragons embody the grace and strength of a reigning monarch, and often approach the control of their territory in much the same way. Though not usually inclined to violence, a Royal Eminence dragon can be a harrowing opponent for any challenger; with their grand stature and limber movements, these dragons are startlingly quick on their feet and utilize an elegant mix of brute strength and deft strategy to conquer their adversaries. When not caught in the throes of combat, a Royal Eminence is known to be quiet and reserved, preferring to watch over their kingdoms from afar and only interfering should their denizens be threatened by an outsider. Yet these dragons are impressively diplomatic with others of their own kind and will even welcome guests from neighboring territories so long as all interactions remain respectful of the ruling host’s sovereignty, though consensus over what constitutes respect seems to vary. | Dohaerys, Shiny Hazard Sign |
Additional information
Fact:
- This is a hybrid breed produced by cross-breeding Royal Blue Dragons and Royal Crimson Dragons.
Rumor:
- To be added.

Dohaerys, spatio | |
Adult | File:Electric male stunned alt.png | Electric Dragons wield electricity with great prowess. Bright sparks race across these dragons’ bodies in a dazzling dance of light, complemented by the blindingly radiant sparks on their tails. Using their bellies and manes as stores for this electrical energy, Electric Dragons wield crackling magic, stunning and electrocuting their prey with a whip of their tail. During mating season it is typically those with the most brilliant sparks—an indicator of strength and hunting ability—that are drawn to each other. | Dohaerys |
Additional information
Fact:
- This release is a new alternate form of Electric Dragons.
- The variant requires the use of Stun to produce, used on the hatchling.
- Hatchlings will remain in their alt form when traded.

Odeen |
Adult | File:Gemshard male orange.png File:Gemshard male teal.png File:Gemshard male purple.png File:Gemshard female orange.png File:Gemshard female teal.png File:Gemshard female purple.png |
Gemshard Dragons are small, gregarious, expressive easterns, living in large clans high in the jungle canopy. Their bodies are covered in tiny, gem-like scales that shimmer in direct light, and each dragon has a unique pattern of markings on the forked spade of its tail. Though Gemshard Easterns cannot fly, they often leap from springy branches high into the sky on sunny days and perform acrobatic spins and twirls to entertain themselves. When the weather turns foul, they pile up together on sturdy tree limbs and interlock the forks of their tails with others to keep warm and dry. | Odeen |
Additional information
Fact:
- This release includes three new variants of Gemshard Dragons.
- Previous Gemshard variants were randomly determined. The new variants will feature a "new time-based mechanic—except for one day when chaos reigns supreme."[1]
- In addition to new variants, existing Gemshard Dragons received a sprite update.
- Market eggs also follow the color-affecting schedule and the color is affected by the day of the purchase.
Rumor:
- Color may be based on day of the week a given egg is laid on:
- Sunday - chaos day (any color)
- Monday - Jade
- Tuesday - Ruby
- Wednesday - Sapphire
- Thursday - Amethyst
- Friday - Aqua
- Saturday - Citrine

Cantormaris alternates release
Sprites | Description | Artist

Egg | Something about this egg seems to lure you in. | –

Mature hatchling | File:Cantormaris mature hatchling green.gif | Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its soft chirps capture your attention.
And look! It’s grown larger and its horns have developed vibrant markings. It must be close to maturing! |
Adrak, birdzgoboom, Infinis |
Adult | Motus Cantormaris Dragons are a calm, down to earth breed of coastal-dwellers. Their annual migrations at the start of spring are among the first indications that winter has ended. They use their robust calls to lure people with a love of nature and desire for freedom to them in a hope to work with others for the benefit of the living world around them. It is considered a sign of luck for one to hear their calls. | Adrak, birdzgoboom, Infinis
Tutela Cantormaris Dragons are a doting, protective breed of coastal-dwellers. Their annual migrations at the start of spring are among the first indications that winter has ended. They use their angelic calls to lure people that might need protection to them in a desire to safeguard and give strength to those in need of succor. It is considered a sign of luck for one to hear their calls. |
Additional information
Fact:
- This release includes two new variants of Cantormaris Dragons.
- Like the other Cantormaris variants, these will be determined by the most recent Breed Specific Actions performed on an egg.[1]
- To produce the white Tutela variant, the player must use Ward.[11]
- To produce the green Motus variant, the player must use Earthquake.
- The egg does not need to be hatched by Earthquake to change to the Motus variant. Eggs that are "unaffected" by the Earthquake can later hatch naturally as Motuses, as long as no other color-affecting BSA is performed on them.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing. |
Corteo, Schenanigans |
Adult | File:Nilia male green.png | Nilia Pygmies reside mostly in mountainous regions, tending to live in large flocks. They are a curious, hyperactive breed; their curiosity often gets them into dangerous situations. Despite this, they are wary around other dragons and animals outside their breed. They are naturally shy and seek their own kind for companionship. Once the trust of a Nilia dragon is earned, they are highly loyal critters, sometimes to the point of being annoying. | Corteo, Schenanigans |
Additional information
Fact:
- This release includes a new variant of Nilia Pygmies.
- The variant is bred-only, produced by "particularly fertile parents".[1]
- Using Fertility on two Nilia Pygmies and breeding them with each other creates the new alt.[12] Using Fertility on only one parent does not result in an alt.[13]
- You can also get the alt with only one Nilia Pygmy as a parent, as long as Fertility is used on both parents, no matter the pygmy breed.[14]
- Abandoning eggs turns them back into regular Nilia. This has since been confirmed by one of the spriter's to be intentional.[15]
Rumor:
- To be added.

Floret Wyverns are an elegant breed, named for the flowerlike mane and tail each individual possesses. They project small fields of magic around themselves that calm those in the field’s proximity, for a short while replacing anxiety and anger with peace-of-mind. Florets are strikingly wise; they often share their knowledge of the world with whomever is willing to listen and learn. They are very faithful to those close to them, and are especially devoted to their partners and young. It is said that the lasting friendship of a Floret is one of the highest testaments to one’s true character. | Pixxelation, Sumoka |
