Crypt Dragons were released on October 31, 2022, as part of the 2022 Halloween event. As a limited-release dragon, they are only capable of producing more Crypt eggs during a brief period before Halloween is celebrated in October. They can still be bred year round, but will only produce their partner's breed of egg.

Like all two-headed dragons, they can only breed with other two-headed breeds and their eggs cannot be bitten by Vampire Dragons.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

This cool, weathered egg is a heavy burden to bear.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has two...faces?

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has two...faces?

And look! It’s grown a wispy mane! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Many once believed that Crypt dragons were omens of ill fortune, prowling old graveyards and abandoned burial sites like sinister guardians. Their unblinking, two-headed gaze can pierce the veil of the spirit realm; one head to condemn the living, the other to guard the dead, as conventional wisdom would have it. Crypt dragons are most active - and their true nature most apparent - when the veil between the living world and spirit realm is at its thinnest. They can be seen gamboling with those souls whose loved ones have long forgotten their names, wispy manes glowing silver-white in the moonlight as they share life with the lifeless and joy with the eternally lost.

The Crypt dragon concept was based loosely on a combination of church grims, imperial guardian lions, and barghests. While they are aloof and not particularly friendly to living creatures, they are also not aggressive unless you try to desecrate their chosen territory. As such, cemetery groundskeepers and archaeologists have become the accidental subject matter experts on Crypt behavior by virtue of needing to coexist with them and build their trust. They are not large compared to many of the dragon breeds in Valkemare, but they are plenty big and vicious enough to ruin a graverobber's life night.

For those who come to understand the Crypt dragon's nature, its presence near a loved one's final resting place can offer a sense of peace: long after they and everyone else who might be able to remember the loved one fondly have moved away or passed on, the Crypt dragon will be there to love and protect their loved one's spirit in their stead.
