Variant determination[]
Variant is determined by the most recent Breed Specific Action performed on a Cantormaris egg. Performing a different color-altering action will overwrite a previous action.
| Variant | Action | |
|---|---|---|
| Mundus | Default; no color-changing actions performed. | |
| Sophos | Precognition. | |
| Itus | Teleport. The teleport must be completed for the color change to take effect. | |
| Iratus | Incubate. | |
| Tutela | Ward. | |
| Motus | Earthquake. The egg does not need to hatch from the earthquake in order to take this form. Eggs that survive the action "unaffected" can be hatched naturally as a Motus. | |
Encyclopedia entry[]
Appearance/Basic Anatomy
- Adults are quite tall and somewhat heavily built.
- These dragons have a multitude of horns atop their heads and up to four small horns along the jawline.
- Their long wings propel them through air and water. Can hold their breath underwater for up to an hour.
- The various types of Cantormaris are determined by what magic, or lack thereof, the egg was exposed to before hatching.
- A long, delicate fin runs from their foreheads to their shoulders. It is used for mating displays and to make themselves appear larger.
- Iratus lack any blue coloration, while Itus lacks any red tones. Motus are the only Cantormaris to completely lack both.
- The colors of a Cantormaris hatchling become more vibrant as it matures.
- Hatch with fully formed wings and are able to fly within days of hatching.
Hatchling Behavior
- Hatchlings adore colorful seashells and make a game of finding and showing off their prizes. They also give them as gifts to treasured friends.
- Young Cantormaris hatchlings love attention. They become upset when ignored.
- Older Cantormaris hatchlings begin to explore independently of their parents, flying up and down the coastline or swimming further from shore.
- As they age, their differing personalities become more apparent and their songs take on different tones.
Adult Behavior
- Most are welcome (or neutral) to the company of humans and other dragons.
- Mundus Cantormaris Dragons are pacifists. They prefer to attempt friendship and maintain peaceful relationships with local coastal settlements, preferring to stay in the area where they were hatched.
- Sophos Cantormaris Dragons have an endless thirst for knowledge and a strong desire to share it with others. They tend to hoard books rather than shells.
- Itus Cantormaris Dragons always have a mischievous twinkle in their eyes. They are known for playing pranks and travelling on a whim, no destination being off limits.
- Iratus Cantormaris Dragons are irascible and lead solitary lives. They possess a seemingly endless hunger and leave only scattered bones in their wake.
- Tutela Cantormaris Dragons are a gentle, but strong breed, having a fiercely protective nature and strong nurturing instincts. They will defend the weak and love to dote on the young.
- Motus Cantormaris Dragons have a generally easygoing nature and love of flora and fauna. Their ability to maneuver around plants without damaging them is remarkable considering their size.
- They can also be fiercely temperamental and hostile to those that intentionally destroy nature without reason.
Habitat
- Confined mostly to temperate oceanic coastlines. They overwinter in the tropics.
- When swimming, they usually head for reefs, where their bright colors fit right in among the reef fish and corals.
- Itus Cantormaris Dragons travel so often that they do not maintain dens. Mundus Cantormars Dragons are the opposite, keeping neat dens near their kin.
- Sophos Cantormaris Dragons like to den very near the ocean, as they find the sounds of the waves soothing, while Iratus Cantormaris Dragons live on rocky cliffs or lonely islands beyond the reefs.
- Tutela Cantormaris prefer dens very close to humans and other dragons, as they tend to be protective of others in and outside their own species, while Motus Cantormaris fill their den and the area around it with lush vegetation.
Diet
- Fish and other seafood make up most of their diet.
- Sometimes they raid nests for eggs or, rarely, hunt large birds.
- Young dragons target crabs and other small creatures stranded in tidepools until they grow large enough to swim safely in the ocean.
