Official Dragon Descriptions

Egg

"This drab egg rests far from the water’s edge."

Hatchling

"Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. This dull-colored hatchling enjoys playing in shallow tidepools, but it is too weak to swim for long."

Mature Hatchling

"Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. This dull-colored hatchling enjoys playing in shallow tidepools, but it is too weak to swim for long. Its newly developed fins allow it to swim for longer periods, and its skin has also become more vibrant. Perhaps something is happening?"

Adult

"Aqualis Dragons inhabit the shallow seas of Valkemare, preferring to make their homes in coral reefs. Due to their need to return to the surface to breathe, they avoid deep water unless absolutely necessary. Although they are quite drab when first hatched, prolonged contact with salt water causes their skin to become bright and iridescent. This vibrancy, when combined with quick movements, confuses the fish these dragons prey upon. Nomadic males travel the length of Valkemare’s reefs in bachelor groups, while females tend to claim a specific area as their own. A group of males will herd a school of fish into a female’s territory, and if she is seeking a mate, she will join the hunt. Once she has eaten her fill, she will choose the most skilled hunter to be her mate."

Additional Information

  • On the subject of morphology, the artist considers these dragons to be Easterns adapted for life in shallow water.[1]
Aqualis scales reflect sunlight (they hunt near the surface) and create their dazzling colors. The males are pack hunters and use teamwork to herd fish into each other's hungry jaws. Females join this hunt if they are courting, but they are usually solitary. When hunting alone, a female uses the tip of her long tail as a lure. Once the fish is interested in the tail, the female sweeps up from behind and eats it.

Aqualis aren't particularly large or powerful creatures. I imagine them to be slightly larger than Mints, not counting their tail. If threatened, they will try to escape to shallower water, or to shore if they must. They aren't particularly agile on land and the sun dries them out after awhile, so they will eventually have to return to the water.
