Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

Wind gusts around this egg.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys playing in the wind, and is quite competitive.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys playing in the wind, and is quite competitive.

And look! Its wings have gotten bigger. It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Aether Wyverns have the ability to control winds utilising air mana. During mating season, rival males often attempt to impress females by hanging onto a rock beside the female and letting another Aether Wyvern blast gale-force winds at them. The one to stay on the rock the longest wins, and if the female wins, she will reject both males. These wyverns also use their ability to control winds to blow away intruding dragons or to capture prey, though an Aether Wyvern’s aim is not perfect. As a solution to their imperfect aim, these wyverns will create large winds that often blow away much more than they originally intended to.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Large wings with scaly membranes, going from blue to white.
  • Wing arms are sturdy enough to be used to walk, with them mostly being rested on the thumb and forefinger of the wing hands.
  • Sharp eyes that can spot prey from afar.
  • Fur always seems to be billowing in the wind due to air mana manipulation
  • Hatchlings are born with short fuzz that grows as they mature.
  • Born with small wings.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Agile while grounded. Can easily run circles around an adult.
  • Once their wings are large enough, their flying is self-taught.
  • Often gets into skirmishes with other hatchlings.
  • Nips and bites to initiate play.

Adult Behavior

  • Spend a large amount of time in the air, but do land occasionally.
  • Will force a reluctant hatchling to leave the nest.
  • Attack intruders by dive-bombing with claws down and manipulating air mana to blow them away. If the intruder doesn’t leave, they will use force.
  • Adults raised in captivity do not are [sic] more mild than their wild kin, but still display aggression.
  • Once prey is spotted, they blow it up into the air with their air mana manipulation to let the fall take care of it. If it has not expired from the fall, the wyvern will place their weight into their strong legs and drop onto the prey item.
  • For a mate to be chosen, one male must attempt to blow another off a cliff face with its magic. The female recipient of this show will participate.
  • If either male wins against the other and the female, it gets the right to mate. If the female wins the duel, neither male is accepted.

Habitat

  • They are comfortable with cold, so much so that they even seek it out.
  • Due to these wyverns being aggressive towards intruders, some dragons stay out of the immediate area.
  • Congregates towards the valleys that have the most prey.

Diet

  • Will steal prey items from other predators if they can.
  • They are known to bring down larger prey in lower elevations.

Additional information[]

So - now that TJ's first Aether has grown up, I can talk.
I'm the conceptor. Never did a sprite, but I did most of the lore - got a lot of help with grammar though, shout-outs to Whirlaway, and Krazy for thst.
I lost my copy of the lore on these guys due to IRL, sadly, but here's what I recall.
- they are carnivores
- territorial tendencies
- they stay in the mountains most of the time
- they're actually decent at getting around on the ground, that's why their wings were designed after vampire bat wings
- the fur is to keep them warm in the cold environment they're native to and in the sky
- their blue and white colouring is a camouflauge - harder to see in the sky
- yes, they do use their wind magic to attack - they like to stun prey that way
Unfortunately, the rest of the info I had is going to have to wait for whenever their encyclopaedia information is added and updated with the descriptions.
And about the name:
So, the aether. It was the Greek concept of the upper atmosphere. The highest reaches of tge sky. I knew when I came up with the idea of these guys that they were gonna be strongly tied to wind and air magic - tge first egg description was along the lines of"this egg shines with air mana!" I passed over Aeolus/Aiolos as aname because it was a bit too specific in mythological connection, but I loved how the aether was the highest reaches of the sky in mythology. And considering these guys were very sky-associated and lived high on mountains, I felt like it was fitting to go with the aether, the highest sky for their name.
