Item guide[]

To complete A Gift of Generations there are 5 items that the player must find or craft: a windchime, an herb, incense, down pillows, and a portrait. The herb, pillows, and portrait each have higher and lower quality options which will still be accepted to complete the game, though the best end is awarded if the high-quality versions of all items are acquired.

  • Windchime
The windchime has 4 required parts: string, reeds, a stone, and musical assistance.
String can be acquired from Marge in the tailor shop. Travel to the center of town, enter the tailor shop, and speak to Marge. Ask her about the wind chime, and she will provide you with the string. She will also tell you about a group of Starsinger Dragons which can be found in the woods to provide musical assistance. Reeds are found by the river. From the outskirts of town, take the road into the woods, then take the footpath to the right. Follow the footpath deeper into the woods, then follow the sound of running water to find the river and collect the reeds. Alternately, if the player has already collected a stone, reeds can be acquired from the oddities shop by asking Mags and Abby about the windchime. The stone can be found in the woods. From the outskirts of town, take the road into the woods and then choose the footpath to the left. Follow the path deeper into the woods to find the stone. Alternately, if the player has already collected reeds, the stone can be acquired from the oddities shop by asking Mags and Abby about the windchime.
Musical assistance does not add an item to the player's inventory but is required to complete the windchime. The player can get assistance from the Starsinger Dragons in the clearing. First, the player must learn about the Starsingers from Marge in the tailor shop. Travel to the center of town, enter the tailor shop, and speak to Marge. Ask her about the wind chime, and she will mention the Starsingers traveling through the woods. To find the clearing, head out of town and take the road to the woods. Take the footpath to the left, and follow it deeper into the woods, climbing over the fallen log to reach the clearing. Here, speak to the Starsingers and ask them about the windchime. They will provide their musical expertise to help with the melody.
Once these tasks are complete, the player must return to the handyman shop in the center of town and assemble the windchime at their workbench.
  • Herb
There are two options for the herb: the higher quality fresh summer cress, or lower quality dried summer cress. First, the player must identify the herb Grant is looking for. Head to the bakery in the center of town and speak with Beatrice. Ask her about the herb you're looking for, and she will tell you it's called "summer cress." The player can then go to the herbalist and speak with Tommy the apprentice. Ask him about summer cress, and he will give you a bundle of dried summer cress, as well as more information about the herb.
After learning more about summer cress from the herbalist, the player can then visit the oddities shop and ask Mags and Abby if they can help find the herb. They will then give the player a bundle of fresh summer cress. Alternately, after learning the name of the herb from Beatrice, the player can visit the apothecary on the outskirts of town and ask Sylvios about the herb. He will also provide a bundle of fresh summer cress.
The dried herb is acceptable to complete the game, but the fresh herb is needed to achieve the best ending.
  • Incense
Similar to the herb, the player must first identify the type of incense Grant is looking for. Visit the outskirts of town and find the butcher shop. Ask the butcher, Joe, about the incense and he will tell you it sounds like "Storm's Fury." Now knowing the name, the player can return to the center of town and visit Marge in the tailor shop. Ask her about the incense and tell her the name, and she will provide the incense.
After learning the name of the incense, it can also be acquired from Mags and Abby's oddities shop. This method requires a few additional steps. First, the player must visit Beatrice at the bakery in the center of town. Ask Beatrice about the portrait, and she will give the player a basket of baked goods and ask the player to take it to her cousin Mark in the woods. To find Mark's cabin, head to the outskirts of town and take the main road to the woods. Follow the main road deeper into the woods, then take the footpath to the right. Talk with Mark to deliver the basket, then return to town and tell Beatrice you've checked up on him. She will reward the player with chocolate. At this point, the player can visit the oddities shop and ask Mags and Abby if she has any, and she will offer to trade for something sweet. The player can exchange the chocolates from Beatrice for the Storm's Fury incense.
There is no quality difference between the incense from Marge or Mags and Abby.
  • Pillows
To create the dragon down pillows, the player first needs to find someone to help make them, and gather the needed feathers.
First, speak to Marge in the tailor shop in town. Ask her about the pillows, and she will agree to sew them if the player can gather the materials. A pillow requires two feathers, and there are four sources of feathers to be found:
  • Bird feathers can be acquired from Joe the butcher. Head to the butcher shop on the outskirts of town and speak to Joe. Ask him about pillows, and tell him Marge has agreed to sew them. He will provide a sack of bird feathers.
  • White Dragon feathers can be acquired from Sylvios in the apothecary shop. Visit the apothecary shop and ask him about pillows. He will give the player a collection of White Dragon feathers.
  • Starsinger Dragon feathers can be collected from the Starsingers in the woods. First, speak to Marge in the tailor shop, and ask her about the windchime to learn about the Starsingers. Next, head to the clearing in the woods. To find the clearing, head out of town and take the road to the woods. Take the footpath to the left, and follow it deeper into the woods, climbing over the fallen log to reach the clearing. Here, speak to the Starsingers and ask them about the pillows. They will provide a collection of their feathers.
  • Assorted dragon feathers can be acquired from Mark the woodsman. To talk to Mark, the player must first deliver a basket of baked goods from Beatrice. Visit Beatrice at the bakery in the center of town. Talk with Mark about the pillows, and he will give over a sack of assorted dragon feathers he has collected.
After collecting at least 2 feathers, the player can return to Marge and ask her to assemble a pillow. After collecting 4 feathers, the player can ask for a second pillow. Only one pillow is needed to complete the game, but two pillows are required to get the best ending.
  • Portrait
Getting the portrait requires two elements: Finding a painter, and getting a description of the painting.
To find the painter, first talk to Marge in the tailor shop. Ask her about the portrait, and she will tell the player that William the cobbler had gotten a painting done locally. She also gives a rough description of the painting. The player can then head to the cobbler shop on the outskirts of town and ask William about his painting. He will say that Sylvios the apothecary painted it. At this point, the player can go to the apothecary and speak to Sylvios about the portrait. Sylvios can then create a simple portrait based on Marge's rough description.
To get a higher-quality portrait, the player needs to get a better description, provided by Mark the woodsman. To speak with Mark, the player must first deliver a basket of baked goods from Beatrice. Visit Beatrice at the bakery in the center of town. Talk with Mark about the painting, and he will give a detailed description. The player can then head to Sylvios in the apothecary shop and ask for another portrait. Using the more detailed description, he produces a better portrait.
The simple portrait is acceptable to complete the game, but a high-quality portrait is required to achieve the best ending.
